We are looking for a Principal or Senior Engineer to join our North East & Scotland Transport Planning Team to lead, plan and deliver a range of traffic and transportation engineering schemes, including concept, design, consultation and implementation.

Work will cover the full project lifecycle from scheme identification through to implementation and could involve multidiscipline delivery teams and multiple stakeholders using a passionate approach to improving transport networks and providing value to clients.

You will also contribute to developing our team and strengthening work winning opportunities through active management of client relationships.

Set within the context of an expanding regional and national business, the role will empower you to influence our expansion plans and develop in areas of growth potential.

You will need to be flexible with working arrangements and it may be necessary to work from other regional offices and / or client offices as project work requires.

A typical week would include :

  • Delivering transport projects which require specialist knowledge and understanding of traffic engineering and design, as part of flexible teams to suit the requirements of each project.
  • Supporting our team of transport planning and development planning specialists, making best use of combined skills and experience, contributing to overall professional development.
  • Working closely and effectively with colleagues at all levels and across disciplines to maximise the benefit to WSP clients of your detailed understanding of traffic engineering and scheme design, and the complementary technical knowledge within the team.
  • Working as part of our Transport Planning team to assist in the development of new opportunities and solutions based on excellent technical understanding so that WSP remains at the forefront of thinking and respond to the changing challenges of providing sustainable mobility.
  • Providing appropriate input to enable the team to meet a variety of client requirements including submission of funding bids, planning applications including transport assessments, scheme drawings for approval at preliminary or detailed design, environmental appraisals, transport policies and strategies.
  • Providing specialist documentation including design reports and supporting analysis, plans and visualisations and supporting narriatives to underpin our projects.
  • We'd love to hear from you if you have :

  • A degree or equivalent in relevant field. Relevant professional qualification or higher degree and membership of professional bodies is desirable
  • Demonstrable experience of working with, and to, relevant design standards, guidance or regulations in the context of both National and Local Government schemes.
  • Robust contemporary knowledge, experience and expertise in traffic and transport engineering and design
  • Experience of working with and developing modelling analysis to support decision making within a consultancy or project focused context
  • Awareness of and commitment to achieving the highest levels of Health and Safety in designs and all aspects of work is a core requirement
  • Strong Analytical skills with creativity in thinking and problem solving will contribute to effective performance you should be highly numerate and able to draw key issues from documents and drawings
  • Knowledge of relevant design software and able to learn and use a range of specialist software packages and systems
  • An understanding of the wider context in which engineering design operates, from policy and legal as well as technical viewpoints.
  • You will interpret and clarify client requirements so that appropriate solutions are developed, and appropriately explained to clients, colleagues and co professionals.

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • The ability to produce high quality documentation and reports tailored to requirements, with clear justification of conclusions.
  • This role will include contributing to projects across sectors and geographies (with potential international opportunities should you be interested) for both public and private sector clients, so a dynamic approach to work including the ability to deal with a diverse workload and prioritise tasks and projects accordingly is desirable.

    You will liaise with clients and across teams, actively contributing to the delivery of both technical and commercial excellence, meeting budget, programme and technical standards and meet QA, CDM and HSE requirements.
