X-Ray Tube Assembly and Test Technician

Reporting to the Process Engineer, working on shift, play a key role in the processing and HV conditioning of x-rays tubes ready for their incorporation into RTT machines.

This will involve operation of a number of large plant items, final assembly processes (wiring and mechanical assembly) of the tube and tube conditioning.


  • Ensuring compliance with COSHH regulations
  • Organising and maintaining a safe and efficient working environment
  • Assisting in the bake-out of tubes including diagnosis and rectification of vacuum leaks
  • Post bake-out Tube Activation, application of lead plates, assembly completion and set up for conditioning of Tubes
  • Assisting in High Voltage conditioning and testing of vacuum tubes
  • Performing TPM activities as required.
  • Accurate and consistent recording of data
  • Use of various plant including bake-out ovens, conditioning rigs and gantry crane
  • Provide an on-going contribution to the development / improvement of the above processes and safe working practices
  • Fault finding and diagnosing issues on vacuum systems and HV conditioning rig equipment and assisting with the rectification of issues.

  • Qualifications

  • Ability to understand plant and processes, and make diagnoses in the event of system malfunctions.
  • Self-discipline to ensure maintenance of best possible working practices in working environment.
  • Great attention to detail and fastidiousness is required to maintain the highest standards of component preparation with full traceability.
  • The ability to follow (and not deviate from) defined processes in work instructions and checklists.
  • Ability to work closely with others and contribute as a member of the team.
  • Good communication skills required for shift hand-over reporting.
  • Ability to perform necessary manual handling duties according to safe working practices.
  • Ability to understand plant and processes, and make diagnoses in the event of system malfunctions.
  • Self-discipline to ensure maintenance of best possible working practices in working environment.
  • Previous experience working as an electronics, mechanical, electomechanical lab technician (or similar) in a hi-tech environment.
  • Demonstrable experience in operating sophisticated manufacturing / technical / scientific equipment.
  • Familiarity with safe working practices and ensuring that others adhere to practices.
  • Working in a hi-tech manufacturing or research environment
  • Technical qualifications in an Engineering or Scientific discipline to ONC / HND level (or significant engineering experience in technical role)
  • IT skills including MS Excel, Outlook
  • Preferred but not essential :

  • HV / UHV vacuum experience
  • Experience with working with high voltage equipment, ideally from a system final test background.
  • X-ray tube operation
  • Experience of working within a clean room environment
  • Helium leak checking of vacuum systems / components
  • Working in accordance with a Quality system
  • Working in accordance with COSHH regulations
  • Working in accordance with ESD control best practices
  • 5S, 6 Sigma Practices
  • Handling of compressed gas cylinders
  • Experienced in working around / with lifting equipment, e.g. gantry crane.
